Built for Detroit houses
Most railing work here is not a blank slate. It starts with what the house already has.
Front-step rails are usually set into poured concrete. Water collects in the post hole, freezes, and road salt eats the steel until the concrete spalls and the rail rocks.
Bungalow and two-flat stairs are narrow and steep, often with a handrail on one side only, or none to the basement. A solid wall rail is frequently the right fix.
In a local historic district, Detroit's Historic District Commission reviews exterior changes, railings included. A rail built to modern height can still be the wrong rail for the porch.
Detroit's rental checklist calls for handrails on stairs of four or more risers and guards on porches. A missing rail is one of the easier items to fail.

No invented numbers here. Each point below is something you can check on the job.
Handrails at 34 to 38 inches, guards where the drop is over 30 inches, and balusters spaced so a 4-inch sphere cannot pass.
Posts are set and sealed so water cannot sit at the base and freeze. New posts set in soil go below the 42-inch frost depth Michigan requires for footings.
If the rail is sound and only the post base has rotted out, you hear that, with the repair quoted alongside the replacement.
Permit office, historic district, rental or point-of-sale inspection: we point out which ones touch your job before you commit.
How it works
Four steps, and the price is in writing before anything is cut or drilled.
Tell us inside or out, roughly how many steps, and what is wrong. Photos help.
We measure the run, check what the posts sit in - concrete, brick, wood or drywall - and talk through materials.
One clear price for the option you pick, plus the repair option where there is one.
Stock aluminum and steel go in fastest; custom iron is fabricated to measure first.
Describe it on the phone or send the form, and we will book a time to measure.
Service areas
Detroit and each suburb run their own building department, so each area page covers the rules that apply there.
